
Horse Chestnut Farm is an existing family home which, as the family has grown older, had become unsuitable in its current form.
BHB Architects were appointed to produce a scheme which sought to arrange the living accommodation in a far more considered way, better suiting the family’s needs, with rooms arranged to maximise the most desirable orientation for natural light depending upon when they were to be used throughout the day, yet still make the most of the incredible views across the surrounding countryside.

BHB produced several concepts, which were presented to the client as interactive 3D presentations, allowing them to be fully immersed in the imagined spaces, allowing constant feedback and development. The finalised scheme proposed an internal re-ordering of the existing house, in conjunction with several new additions, to create a layout where the living spaces are linked in an enfilade fashion, with each space linking to the next, in a logical fashion they are to be inhabited.
The proposed extensions are clad in blackened timber, allowing them to be read as later additions to the existing farmhouse, but still responding to the colour tones of the wider agricultural landscape. This, combined with simple detailing serve to re-enforce the local character. After receiving planning approval, the project is now on site, and BHB have continued to provide technical support.

The Master’s House, St John’s Hosptial, Lichfield.
Assessment of historic fabric to ensure a secure understanding of the historic fabric, and how appropriate breathable insulat ions and secondary glazing could be sympathetically installed.
Solution: A breathable IWI Sheep Wool Insulation and lime mortar on wood wool. Sympathetic interiors following the completed installation of secondary glazing, breathable insulation, lime plaster and breathable decorations. The property has reduced its winter energy costs and enjoys a more comfortable thermal environment.

CAT A fitout Office project located in Birmingham City Centre which achieved Excellent under the BREEAM UK Refurbishment and Fitout criteria. Careful design decisions chosen alongside consulting with BREEAM Professionals allowed us to achieve the required Excellent BREEAM Rating and achieve a modern, flexible and focus driven working space interior fitout.
Our design teams can identify when thermal modelling software, daylight assessment or building fabric analysis is required for U-value calculation or other aspects of building performance.
