The Grade II listed Assembly Rooms in Tamworth, forms a key part of Tamworth Borough Council's regeneration plan to transform the town centre and attract new visitors and businesses. The practice has undertaken the detailed design and interior scheme for the extension and conservation works.
The practice has worked closely with the client and consultant team to achieve an appealing and well resolved design. This part HLF funded project will deliver many outcomes, with the architectural heritage and modern building facilities being central to the transformation.
The original grade II listed Victorian building dates back to 1889, and historically it has been a key civic assembly space for the entertainment and gathering together of Tamworth’s society for a diverse range of events. These activities include: Victorian Tea Dances, live music (which has showcased ‘The Beatles’ & ‘The Rolling Stones’), polling, exhibitions and numerous entertainment activities. The building will be restored and redecorated throughout, sensitively respecting its Victorian heritage. All its theatre facilities and auditorium spaces will be upgraded to suit a modern and hireable performance venue in the twenty first century. There will also be an enlarged foyer, a new café and bar, better welfare facilities, all the back of house amenities a theatre requires, and a new multi-purpose room.
An attractive and open colonnaded extension along the northern side of the extension will strengthen the civic identity and invite the public into the new multi-purpose room. This space will invite passers-by to take an interest in the activities of the Tamworth Assembly Rooms and increase the building’s offer and engagement with the regenerated public realm.

Assessment of historic fabric to ensure a secure understanding of the historic fabric, and how appropriate breathable insulat ions and secondary glazing could be sympathetically installed.
Solution: A breathable IWI Sheep Wool Insulation and lime mortar on wood wool. Sympathetic interiors following the completed installation of secondary glazing, breathable insulation, lime plaster and breathable decorations. The property has reduced its winter energy costs and enjoys a more comfortable thermal environment.

Careful design decisions chosen alongside consulting with BREEAM Professionals allowed us to achieve the required Excellent BREEAM Rating and achieve a modern, flexible and focus driven working space interior fitout.
Our design teams can identify when thermal modelling software, daylight assessment or building fabric analysis is required for U-value calculation or other aspects of building performance.
