Bluegates Farm, Whittington

Bluegates Farm is a private residence located in Whittington, close to the historic city of Lichfield. Works were carried out in two phases and included the sensitive repair of the Grade II listed farmhouse, the repair and conversion of the Grade II listed barns and the construction of a modern 2 storey extension.

Phase 1 concentrated on the existing farmhouse which was in a particularly poor and dilapidated condition. Extensive repair works were detailed and scheduled by the practice, centred around the roof which had many of the structural timbers replaced due to extensive rot. The external walls were also bowed and required new structural intervention.

The practice undertook a programme of consultation with the local authority planning department and conservation officer, as well as an appointed archaeologist. Through discussions, designs were approved that created a large family dwelling by converting and linking the existing barns with the farmhouse. The extensions were designed to compliment the existing listed structures, with external materials such as larch cladding and zinc roofing chosen to reflect agricultural buildings seen on many nearby working farms.

CASE STUDY: Internal Wall Insulation

The Master’s House, St John’s Hosptial, Lichfield.

Assessment of historic fabric to ensure a secure understanding of the historic fabric, and how appropriate breathable insulat ions and secondary glazing could be sympathetically installed.

Solution: A breathable IWI Sheep Wool Insulation and lime mortar on wood wool. Sympathetic interiors following the completed installation of secondary glazing, breathable insulation, lime plaster and breathable decorations. The property has reduced its winter energy costs and enjoys a more comfortable thermal environment.

CAT A fitout Office project located in Birmingham City Centre which achieved Excellent under the BREEAM UK Refurbishment and Fitout criteria. Careful design decisions chosen alongside consulting with BREEAM Professionals allowed us to achieve the required Excellent BREEAM Rating and achieve a modern, flexible and focus driven working space interior fitout.

Our design teams can identify when thermal modelling software, daylight assessment or building fabric analysis is required for U-value calculation or other aspects of building performance.
