Axiom Apartments

Axiom Apartments, Cheltenham

The Axiom apartments in Cheltenham comprise a conversion of a historic former mill building.

The building was formerly known as the Axiom Centre and has been used intermittently over the past 30 years as a music venue and community arts centre/café, however the building has been vacant for majority of the past 40 years and was in a very poor state of repair.

A proposed development for the site had recently been granted planning permission (prior to its acquisition by Cape Homes) however the proposal involved highly intrusive structural modifications to the building and the construction of an additional storey – this scheme proved to be both practically and financially unviable.

The scheme designed involves a sensitive conversion of the building into 19 apartments and includes refinishing and restoration of the existing structure and fabric and the introduction of extensive aluminium replacement windows and screens (designed to reflect the character and pattern of the original fenestration) and external architectural metalwork.

The external courtyard area has been attractively landscaped including the re-use of the existing cobble stones and the creation of planting and paved amenity areas.

The scheme has received nominations for both local and national awards.
