Pilgrims Cottage was a dilapidated two-storey dwelling situated in an unusual secondary location set back from the main a40 London road in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. The practice were originally approached to prepare designs for the refurbishment and extension to Pilgrims Cottage.
Following an inspection of the property the client agreed to our recommendation that the building should be demolished and a contemporary new dwelling designed to replace it. Whilst the principle of a replacement dwelling was acceptable to the planning authority, the site’s unconventional setting and physical restrictions presented an intriguing design challenge.
The resulting design represents a striking contemporary dwelling, exhibiting a combination of modern and traditional materials, creating clean lines and a strong built-form.
Pilgrims Cottage offers modern flexible accommodation, with the wide bi-fold doors to the kitchen/ dining room reinforcing the relationship between the interior of the dwelling and the external garden/amenity area.
