The site of a former garage on the upper part of Cleeve Hill, outside of Cheltenham, benefits from spectacular views over Cheltenham Racecourse, the Vale of Gloucester and the Malvern Hills beyond. The practice was appointed to design a scheme for the redevelopment of the site.
The steeply sloping topography of the site demanded a split level solution, and the bold contemporary design allows for the provision of external terraces and balconies at each of the three floor levels to take maximum advantage of the unparalleled views.
The development comprises two pairs of houses, with the dwellings each offering different floor layouts and levels of accommodation.
The geology of the site posed significant challenges on an engineering level, with one of the pairs of dwellings located on a slip-plane on the side of the hill – the substructure to these two plots therefore incorporates deep contiguous piling to the retaining walls and a piled lower floor structure.
The dwellings have been constructed to a very high specification, each incorporating a passenger lift, state of the art kitchen and sophisticated smart electrical/entertainment systems and services installations.
