No.22

No.22, Birmingham

No. 22, previously known as Hestia House, is a 3 storey office block which has been converted into 23 high quality apartments for social housing.

Spring Housing Association is a local charity who aim to provide high quality accommodation for people in housing need.  Their mission statement is “to create long term prosperity by investing to prevent homelessness and social isolation”.

At No.22 Spring intend to house their tenants in the apartments to the upper floors, with a community & enterprise resource space together and offices to the ground floor.

The practice were appointed to design the ground floor refurbishment, prepare the public consultation and assist with providing information to accompany a grant funding application.

The existing spaces were constrained by limited light to the rear (owing to the railway station directly behind), as such our concept was to “open up” the interior with a glass corridor, to allow the largest room at the rear to “borrow” light from the large amount of glazing on the front elevation.  The modern interior design was suggested to create an environment that inspires both staff and tenants.  This includes large scale local map prints to fill entire walls in smaller offices, and “the cave” in the large Communal Hub room – a series of profiled timber fins to infer a more private space within the larger room.
